What Is Brand Positioning and How Do You Define It?

October 22, 2026

Brand positioning is the distinct space a brand aims to occupy in its audience’s mind relative to alternatives. It is not a slogan. It is a choice about whom the brand serves, which problem it solves, what advantage it uses, and what it will not try to be.

The four questions positioning must answer

  1. Who is the most important audience?
  2. What category or competitive frame are we in?
  3. What primary benefit should make the audience choose us?
  4. What evidence makes that claim credible?

Start with evidence, not attractive words

Use customer insight, sales conversations, competitor analysis, search behaviour, and service experience to uncover unmet needs. Evidence reduces opinion-led debate and ties differentiation to what customers genuinely value.

Write a positioning statement

A useful structure is: For [audience] who need [need], our brand is the [frame of reference] that delivers [distinct benefit] because [proof]. This is an internal decision tool, not copy that must appear unchanged in advertising.

Test whether the positioning is strong

  • It is clear enough to guide choices and exclusions
  • It matters to customers rather than only internal teams
  • It differs from competitors in a defensible way
  • The organisation can deliver the promise consistently
  • It can shape products, services, content, and experiences

Frequently Asked Questions

How is brand positioning different from a tagline?

Positioning is an internal strategic principle. A tagline is a short external expression that may communicate only one part of that positioning.

Can a brand have several positions?

A brand should have one core position, while messages can adapt to segments and channels without contradicting it.

When should positioning be reviewed?

Review it when customers, competitors, products, or business direction change materially, or when teams describe the brand’s difference inconsistently.
